Well, that was a quick way to wear out a welcome.
Just two years after making Johnny Manziel the 22nd overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft, it looks like the Cleveland Browns are ready to cut their loses with the troubled quarterback.
ESPN reported this morning that according to a league source, Manziel’s time with the Browns organization will come to an end in March.
Cleveland has to wait until March because as of right now, the team doesn’t have the salary cap space to release Manziel until the beginning of the new league year on March 9th, when the salary cap will rise.
According to the report, releasing Manziel in February would count $4.6 million against the cap, space the Browns do not have until the increase in cap space takes affect because of rolling over their remaining 2015 salary cap into the next year.
New Browns Executive Director of Football Operations Sashi Brown released a statement this morning on the subject, all but confirming the writing on the wall.
“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field,” Brown’s statement said. “Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.”
