“(Special Teams Coordinator) Coach (Darren) Rizzi told me this morning before anybody really knew,” said Darr.
From 2011-2013, Fields’ net punting average was above 41 yards each season. Last year, his net yardage went from 42.4 to 38.6.
Fields’ punts inside the 20-yard-line also dropped from 33 in 2013 to 21 in 2014.
The move will save the Dolphins money because Fields was set to make more than $2 million this season while the undrafted free agent punter Darr will only earn the league minimum.
Last season while playing at the University of Tennessee, Darr punted the ball 80 times for a 42.2 average in 13 games. 30 of Darr’s punts were inside the 20-yard-line and 21 one of his punts were 50 yards or longer.
Darr is looking forward to the challenge, but he doesn’t want to be compared to Fields.
“Brandon (Fields) is a great punter, but, at the same time, I kind of look at myself as a separate entity from Brandon,” said Darr. “We’re different players, different people, but we both have good unique skillsets. Brandon’s (been) really successful. If I have half the career that he’s had, I’ll be happy.”
Dolphins also released running back Demitrius Bronson, so now the team is at 75 players before the end of Tuesday’s deadline.
