After a bad quarterback draft class two years ago, last year was thought to be a better year for quarterbacks and it definitely was better than 2013 class, but there’s still a lot left to be determined from Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr, and yes, even Johnny Manziel. If you looked at this year’s class one or two years ago, it would have looked like a big time year to get your franchise quarterback, but now it looks like a two horse race with the rest just watching. Franchise quarterbacks don’t have to be taken in the 1st round only, but from my impression, there are a lot of guys that probably won’t get starting time.
The obvious two guys getting all the publicity are Florida State’s Jameis Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. Both are candidates for the #1 overall pick and depending on the direction that Tennessee wants to go, they could go 1st and 2nd. Winston came in 17 pounds lighter than his playing weight of 248 and Mariota came in 7 pounds heavier than his playing weight of 215. Both quarterbacks did themselves some good by the weight loss/gain. Winston is not more toned and in better shape while Mariota will be able to take more hits on a fuller frame. Brent Hundley of UCLA is, by most people, looked at as the #3 quarterback, but he is way behind Winston and Mariota in the eyes of most general managers.
