The Jets and coach Rex Ryan are known for their bold attitude and willingness to say anything to the media, and Antonio Cromartie is following in his coaches footsteps.
Cromartie dared Brady to throw at him in this week’s Jets-Patriots game.
“I hope I’m a target this game,” Cromartie said with a smile. “I want to be a target every game.”
You should be careful what you wish for. Brady has been on fire this year, leading the league in passing, with 1,553 yards and 13 touchdowns in four games. Brady is still on pace to throw for over 6,000 yards this season.
Brady’s receivers are racking up huge numbers as well. Wes Welker is also on record pace with 40 receptions for 616 yards and 5 TDs, which has him on a pace for 160 receptions and over 2,400 yards. TE Rob Gronkowski has another 5 TDs and WR Deion Branch has 16 receptions for 226 yards.
With Darrelle Revis expected to cover Welker, Cromartie will likely get more than his share of targeting.
“To beat the hell out of their receivers, that’s our game plan on the outside,” Cromartie said. “It’s to try to mess up their timing routes as much as we can.”
The Jets have one of the best secondary’s in the league, but calling out the hottest passing offense in the league seems to be playing with fire.
