Around the AFC South: Week Six Standout Stories

We have now completed the first five weeks of the 2014-2015 NFL season.  The AFC South is definitely very competitive at the top of the division.  The Houston Texans are 3-3 and the Indianapolis Colts are first place in the division with 4-2 records overall.  The Tennessee Titans sit in third place in the division with a 1-4 record, and are really starting to really fall off.  The Jacksonville Jaguars are struggling mightily with a 0-5 record.  If the Jaguars don’t win a game and win one quick, their season is as good as OVER.

Houston Texans

_rob3The Texans suffered a 3-2 record after a tough loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas, Texas.  They came close but couldn’t quite get it done losing the game 20-17.  Dan Bailey of the Cowboys kicked a clutch 58 yard field goal in overtime to hand the Texans the heartbreaking loss.  There were so bright spots in the game for the Texans.  Texans running back Arian Foster had a great game.  He ran the ball 23 times for a total of 157 yards and got into the end zone two times.  Quarterback, Ryan Kilpatrick completed 16 out of 25 passes for a total of 154 yards.

The Texans had no time to sit around feeling sorry for themselves coming off of the loss to the Cowboys.  This week they faced a tough Indianapolis Colts team coming off of a short week on Thursday Night Football.  This is the team that they were in a tie with for first place in the division with, so this game was PIVOTAL.  Unfortunately, the Texans came up short in this contest.  Houston put up a valiant comeback effort but still suffered a 33-28 loss.  Houston was able to get big games out of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Arian Foster and Andre Johnson on offense.  JJ Watt has been playing out of his mind on the defensive side of the ball.  He was able to recover a fumble and return it for a touchdown.

Fitzpatrick completed 15 out of 23 passes for 212 yards and 1 touchdown.  Arian Foster played up to his usual standards.  He carried the ball a total of 20 times throughout the ballgame for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Andre Johnson caught 7 passes for 99 yards and 1 touchdown.  With all of these positive things that happened in this game Houston still came up short.  This was a tough loss for the Texans as they now slide into second place in the division.  They look to bounce back against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football on October 20th.  They will have time to prepare and get it all together for this tough Pittsburgh Steelers team.  Only time will tell if they will be prepared.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts had to a 3-2 record after a big time victory over the Baltimore Ravens this past Sunday.  The Colts were able win the game 20-13.  Andrew Luck has been playing excellent football lately.  This game he completed 32 of 49 passes for 352 yards and 1 touchdown.  Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson combined to rush for 105 yards.  T.Y. Hilton and Reggie Wayne combined to catch 16 passes for a total of 167 yards.

The Colts looked to carry this momentum into a divisional showdown on Thursday night football with the Houston Texans.  They felt that if they were on their “A” game and could minimize their mistakes then they were in the driver’s seat.  Could Andrew Luck continue his hot streak and get it done?  Would the running backs step up and be able to lift some of the load off of Luck?  Would the receivers continue to make catches and big plays?  These questions were answered with an emphatic yes as the Colts were able to get the 33-28 win over the Texans.  Andrew Luck came up HUGE with a statement of a game.  He completed 25 out of 44 passes for a total of 370 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw combined for 75 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.  T.Y. Hilton WENT INTO BEAST MODE this game with 9 grabs for 223 yards.  The Colts are looking like a team that is on a MISSION.  Let’s see how they fare next Sunday, October 19th versus the Cincinnati Bengals who are also playing some excellent football.

Tennessee Titans

_rob1The Tennessee Titans are coming off of a devastating 1 point loss to the Cleveland Browns.  They lost the game 29-28 to fall to a 1-4 record overall.  Losses such as this one are very tough to recover from but the Titans have to find a way to not let this get them too down.  There were some bright spots in the game against the Browns.  Charlie Whitehurst completed 13 of 21 passes for a total of 194 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Kendall Wright and Shonn Greene rushed for a total of 79 yards.  Justin Hunter and Nate Washington combined to catch 7 passes for a total of 156 yards and 1 touchdown.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are struggling mightily this season.  The lost this past Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers.  If the Jaguars cannot figure out something’s, and figure them out quick their season will be all the way over before the end.  A bright spot for the Jaguars has been quarterback, Blake Bortles.  He completed 22 out of 36 passes for 191 yards.
