This year’s draft is at the beginning of May which is very different from any other draft, usually the drafts are at the end of April. Goodell wants to build more of a dramatic feel for fans, plus it will gain more exposure and revenue for the league.
There have been some positive and negative criticism with the change of direction with the draft. On the positive side Tampa Bay’s head coach Lovie Smith had liked the idea of the extra time to prepare for the draft. Goodell had recently spoke to Smith about the idea and this is what coach Lovie Smith had to say about it,”It gives me a chance to have a minicamp, evaluate my players, and make some decisions on what we need in the draft.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was not pleased with the inquiry of extending the draft and was very blunt about how he felt about the future of the NFL. “I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion. I’m just telling you pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered, and they’re getting hoagy. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I’m just telling you, when you’ve got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That’s rule No. 1 of business.”
“They’re trying to take over every night of TV and initially it’ll be the biggest rating thing there is. Then if they get Saturday, now they’re impacting college and then if they go to Wednesday, at some point, people get sick of it.”
It will be interesting to see how things pan out and if there can ever be too much football.
