Redskins Make Roster Moves

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Darryl Sharpton and signed free agent kicker Jake Rogers. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. In addition, the team announced that they have released center Will Montgomery.

Darryl SharptonSharpton (5-11, 235) was originally selected by the Houston Texans in the fourth round (102nd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He appeared in 42 games with 19 starts in four seasons in Houston from 2010-13, recording 144 tackles (93 solo), three passes defensed, one interception, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovered.

Last season, Sharpton appeared in 15 games with eight starts, both career highs, and posted single-season bests in total tackles (87), solo tackles (56) and fumbles forced (one). Coaches credited him with a team-leading 127 tackles (69 solo).

Sharpton played collegiately at Miami (Fla.) from 2005-09, where he started 30 of the 52 games in which he played and recorded 255 tackles (154 solo). He started 12 games as a senior and led the team with a career-high 106 tackles (65 solo) and added a forced fumble, three passes defensed and an interception which he returned for a 73-yard touchdown.

Sharpton, 26, attended Coral Gables (Fla.) H.S., where he was earned All-Dade County honors after compiling 96 tackles (three for loss), two interceptions and four blocked punts as a senior in 2004. He was born on Jan. 1, 1988.

Rogers (6-3, 195) originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as a college free agent on July 28, 2011. Across three NFL seasons, he has had stints with the Saints (2011), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2011-12), Dallas Cowboys (2012-13) and New York Giants (2013).

Rogers played collegiately at Cincinnati from 2008-11, finishing as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 339 points.

Rogers, 26, attended Warsaw (Ind.) H.S. where he was a three-time all-league selection in soccer and set school records for most PATs and field goals. He was born on May 24, 1987.
