NFL Combine: Running Backs Full Measurements

One position at the NFL Combine that has declined in importance, but has gotten more value, is the running back position. With more and more teams going to a running back by committee in their backfield, the position is not at the point where you have to be a “potential” elite back to even go in round 1. This year at the NFL Combine, there seems to be a group of 3-4 backs that can all be taken as the 1st RB, but none of them look like they will be taken in round 1.

The new aged NFL wants RBs that can catch out the backfield and are shiftier, than fast. This year at the NFL Combine, there is a bunch of value for players that will be taken from round 3 through round 5. Players like Bishop Sankey from Washington, Charles Sims from West Virginia, and Marion Grice from Arizona State are 3 guys that I feel could be surprised RBs in the league next year. All 3 of them ended up in the same range, right around 210 lbs.

In terms of the bigger backs, Carlos Hyde of Ohio State leads that group, coming in at 230 lbs, along with Jeremy Hill of LSU, who came in at 233 lbs. If you want a scatback, De’Anthony Thomas from Oregon should put on a show with his forty, but he’s only 174 lbs.  Two other backs of note are Tre Mason of Auburn, who came in at 207 lbs, Lache Seastrunk of Baylor, who came in at 201, and the RB that most consider the top RB in the draft, even though it’s not a consensus, Ka’Deem Carey of Arizona, who also, like Mason, came in at 207 lbs.

Below is a list of all the heights, weights, and hand lengths of all the Running Backs from the NFL Combine.
