The Oakland Raiders made a decision to release Matt Flynn Monday afternoon. Flynn had struggled throughout the preseason and could never really get into the groove when he had a chance. Flynn was battling Terrelle Pryor for the starting position in training camp and preseason, but had lost the job. “I don’t know exactly what the reason was. Why it didn’t work … it just didn’t work,” Allen said about Flynn on Monday. “Terrelle came in and took over the job.”
“It hasn’t worked out like we anticipated and we’ve got to make decisions and we’ve got to move forward and continue to go,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said last Wednesday, when he announced Pryor would be returning to the starting slot. “Matt’s going to continue to battle and scratch and claw, and I still believe that he’s a capable quarterback, but we’re going to give (Matt) McGloin a chance.”
”This kid’s going to continue to improve,” Allen said. ”He’s probably leaps and bounds ahead of where we thought he would be at this point in time. The key for him is he continues to work and continues to strive to get better on the little things.”
The Raiders had paid Flynn 6.5 million to play for them this season and now it is in vain. Flynn has improved his awareness and his accuracy when he is flushed out of the pocket, but the only factor he needs to improve in will be the consistency in his game.
He has the talent to be great, but there are games he has played in when he throws costly interceptions and takes way too many sacks.
