Eagles vs. Chiefs: What it Takes to Win

091613-smith-alex-600This will be a homecoming for the Chief’s head coach Andy Reid with  returning to Philadelphia. He has had a remarkable legacy with the Eagle’s organization and gave the city of brotherly love something to cheer about.

The chief’s defense needs to find a way to stop DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy from having a big game. In  the first two games both of these players had caused numerous problems for defenders. D. Jackson had a total of 297 receiving yards combined in the two games. If the Chiefs can control the field position than they have a greater chance of grinding out a win.

Last week the Chief’s mobilized the Dallas Cowboy’s arsenal attack. Des Bryant was the only factor that had kept the Cowboys in the game. Time after time the Chiefs had stop the Cowboys by getting out of zone and playing man on man, which stop Tony Romo from connecting with his wide receivers. The key to that victory was time management and having the confidence in your secondary to hold their own against physical receivers.

The Eagles receivers are not physically, but they have loads of speed. The Chiefs have to get to Michael Vick; if the chiefs can not apply a pass rush than Vick will have time to deliver the deep passes. Their stiff defense held opponents to 8 points and 55 rushing yards this season.

Alex Smith had rushed for a career high 57 yards against the Cowboys. Smith who is not really known for his running ability, had took advantage of what the Cowboys gave him. The Cowboys defenders were over aggressive, which gave Alex room to run. If the Eagle’s defense over plays as a play, Smith has no problem with running the ball. Smith has been on fire with throwing accurate passes; in the last 2 games he had rushed for 82 yards, threw for 4 td’s, has no interceptions, and has a quarterback rating of 94.7.

In order to get a victory, Smith has to turn the ball loose and stop being too conservative. Dwayne Bowe has only 8 receptions for 86 yards this season. Bowe will need to have an impact in this game. He is a physical receiver and with the Eagle’s secondary looking suspect, Bowe will have a lot of opportunities to make big plays.

The Eagles offense has ben clicking on another level; they are second in the league with averaging 477 yards a game and averaging 31.5 points per contest. Michael Vick have been mistake free and utilizes the sideline when he is rushed outside the pocket. Vick had a career high, throwing for 428 yards against the San Diego Chargers. He ranks third in the league with a passer rating of 119.

The Eagle’s offense line has done a great job with patching up the problems they had last year; Vick was only sacked once against the Chargers. The offensive line is one of the keys in this game. The Chiefs loves to attack their opponents by using different blitzing schemes and does well against the spread offense. McCoy needs to get involve more, last week McCoy rushed for 54 yard with 11 carries; he needs to get more touches. Philadelphia Eagles v San Diego Chargers

Brent Celek and Zack Ertz has been a non factor this season; each of them combined for 3 catches. Vick needs to get Celek and Ertz the ball more, doing this will take the pressure off of D. Jackson and L. McCoy.

On the defensive side of the Ball the Eagle’ s secondary had given up way too many yards; against the Chargers they have given up 539 yards of total offense. That is unacceptable in a coarse of a game. It was too many pass interferences calls, holding penalties, and they could not the Chargers off the field on third downs. The secondary needs to stay home and stop jumping routes.

Keys to Victory

The Chiefs need to get Vick off the field on third downs, do not let him get time in the pocket to deliver deep passes. Alex Smith needs to slow down the pace of the game and the coaching staff needs to be more aggressive with their play calls.

The Eagles need to stop scoring so quick, utilize and control the time. Use your timeouts wisely. the secondary needs to stop missing tackles and stop giving free yards to their opponents.
