Colts Jeff Saturday "Play Football, Be a Man"

Colts Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday is frustrated with the team’s losing streak, and decided to take matters into his own hands.  The Colts have started a league-worst 0-9, made worse by the fact that they were picked as a playoff team before losing quarterback Peyton Manning.

Saturday called the team together on Monday to try to get everyone in a different state of mind heading into a very winnable game against the 2-6 Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Jags have a solid defense but their offense has struggled all season, as they have only scored more than 16 points in one game all season.  Looking ahead at the schedule, this is probably the Colts best chance for a win for the remainder of the season.

“I felt like it needed to be said and I said it,” Saturday said of the meeting. “We just need to play better as a team, we need to get wins and ultimately that’s what it was about.”

“We all kind of have an open policy as far as addressing the team,” Saturday said. “It’s just not something that has to happen very often, but then again, we haven’t been in this position very often.”

That’s an understatement – they haven’t been in this position (0-9) since 1997, when they started 0-10.  This was the kind of play that resulted in getting a number one draft pick to select Peyton Manning with.

And his words resonated with his teammates.  “It was really stern,” rookie left tackle Anthony Castonzo said. “It was like, ‘Listen, we’re not joking around. We’re 0-9 right now.’ ”

“He did what a veteran should do,” wide receiver Reggie Wayne said. “I think everybody understood where he was coming from and I think we all took it personally and we should.”

“He didn’t have to yell, he didn’t have to scream or sound like a macho man or Randy Savage,” Wayne said.

“Play football, nothing else. Love football, nothing else. Be a man, nothing else.”
