An NFL spokesperson indicated today that it was “a safe assumption” that the league will review the incident of Lions DT Ndamukong Suh stepping on Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith next week, when plays are reviewed for disciplinary action.
In the video, Suh and Dietrich-Smith are seen tangled up on the ground, and Suh was repeatedly pushing Dietrich-Smith’s helmet into the ground after the play. When Suh was back up and being separated, he appeared to intentionally stomp on Dietrich-Smith who was still lying on the ground.
Suh has been fined three times previously for illegal hits, and met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last month to review his hits and what the league guidelines are on what is legal and what isn’t.
After the game, Suh commented, “I’m, first and foremost, only going to apologize to my teammates, my coaches and my true fans for allowing the refs to have an opportunity to take me out of this game.”
He defended his actions by saying, “My intentions were not to kick anybody.”
“I was on top of a guy, being pulled down, and trying to get up off of the ground and why you see me pushing his helmet down (is) because I’m trying to remove myself from the situation, and as I’m getting up, I’m getting pushed, so I’m getting myself on balance and getting out of the situation,” Suh said. “With that, a lot of people are going to interpret it as, create their own story lines for seeing what they want to interpret it. But I know what I did, and the man upstairs knows what I did.”
Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said, “It’s difficult to say you’re disappointed when somebody’s intent is to get out of the situation.”
“But we also can’t leave any gray area and can’t give an official any reason to make that call.”
Suh could face a fine and/or a suspension for the actions.
