Victor Cruz: Giants Should Go After an Outside Receiver in the NFL Draft

Victor-Cruz-Feature-Coach-640x430With the NFL Draft approaching there are many teams that are trying to figure out what type of player do they want to fit in their system; like other teams frantic in this frenzy, the New York Giants are trying to figure out what type of player could fit what they are trying to accomplish next season.

Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has been attempting to convince upper management that they should get an outside receiver; “If I had my choice, if I had my pick, I think we should go receiver,” Cruz said on NFL Total Access. “I think we definitely need some help, especially losing a guy like Hakeem Nicks, such a big-play guy in our offense.”

“A big-play receiver is something we need in this offense to be successful,” Cruz continued. “An outside guy that can do the job and that can help fuel all the other receivers in the locker room and put some fire up under them to get them where they have to be says Cruz.”

Even offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride went a step further saying that the Giants need a receiver to win battles in matchups against the bump and run coverage. The Giants last season were held to 4,920 offensive yards while their opponents exceeded over 5,000 offensive yards. The Giants struggled to find any type of momentum offensively and defensively and finish the season off with an atrocious record of 7-9.

Cruz wants to recruit Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans to the Giants, he feels like it will help the Giants out tremendously; “He’s a guy that’s a big body that can get down the field, that can catch the ball with strength over his head, around defenders,” Cruz said. “He’s a guy that I watched a lot during his college tenure and that I’m excited about.” The last time the Giants had picked a receiver in the first round was in 2009 where they had grabbed Hakeem Nicks.
