One day after Tim Tebow led the Broncos to a come from behind 13-10 overtime victory over Chicago, Bears Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher paid Tebow a backhanded compliment, referring to him as “a good running back.”
Urlacher went on to explain, “He does a good job for them. They have a good offense with him back there. They do some different plays. I thought we did a good job overall.”
The Bears did shut Tebow down for much of the game, but his passing was instrumental in the final touchdown drive, where he completed 7 of 7 passes for 63 yards and a TD. Asked specifically about Tebow’s passing, Urlacher said,”Scrambles well, gets guys scrambling around and, you know, we just gotta plaster (cover) our guy and fight him, don’t let him do that.”
Regardless of what you want to call Tebow (quarterback, running back, hybrid) or what traits you want to ascribe to him (Broncos coach John Fox used the term “competitive greatness“), you can’t argue with his results. He is 7-1 as a starter and has led his team from behind in practically every game. He is an effective leader on the field, and his teammates believe that he will be there in crunch time, regardless of what happens in the first 55 minutes of the game.
He is definitely a leader and a great clutch football player, even if he currently plays the quarterback position differently than most everyone else in the league.
