Head coach for the Miami Dolphins Tony Sparano is said to be safe in his job for a few weeks anyway according to reports.
The Dolphins record is 0-4 following Sunday’s 26-16 loss to the San Diego Chargers and the team has a bye in Week 5. The South Florida Sun Sentinel, citing a high-ranking NFL source, reported Monday that Sparano is “certain” to survive the team’s off week and coach its next game on Oct. 17 at the New York Jets.
The source would not characterize Sparano’s job security beyond the Oct. 17 game, the newspaper reported.
“People are going to speculate,” veteran Dolphins linebacker Jason Taylor said. “It’s out of our hands. It’s not something we have control over. We obviously hope it doesn’t happen. But people are going to have opinions, especially with a week off. They’re going to have two weeks to come up with all these scenarios of things that should happen and this and that.”
The cancellation of the coach’s scheduled Monday press conference set off speculation as to his possible departure.
However, Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said that the press conference was canceled due to the “timing and logistics” of the team’s return from San Diego. Greene said that Sparano informed him Sunday that he wouldn’t have anything new to say on Monday, because he wouldn’t have had a chance to review the film or to update the status of quarterback Chad Henne.
Since leading the Dolphins to the AFC East title in his first year, Sparano has a 14-22 record.
The Jets, who didn’t look that great in yesterday’s fall to the Ravens, just might be Sparono’s lucky charm. He has coached the Dolphins to three consecutive victories over the Jets.
