Schottenheimer's Future Rests in Sanchez's Arm

This past offseason, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine were both given contract extensions.  The new deals run through the 2012 season.  This is a subject of contention for Jets fans because in recent weeks, Schottenheimer and quarterback Mark Sanchez have been hearing the boos from the hometown fans.

Many fans are not happy with Schottenhiemer’s play calling, and Sanchez does not seem very comfortable in this offense, as they have moved away from the power running game (“ground and pound”), forcing Sanchez to throw many more passes than in the past.

If the Jets don’t make the playoffs this year, the question will be if Schottenheimer will stay on the coaching staff or will owner Woody Johnson eat the rest of his new contract and fire him.  These next five games should give us our answer.

On the injury front, defensive lineman Mike DeVito has a sprained knee and is doubtful for the game against Washington this week.  Good news is RB LaDainian Tomlinson and WR Jeremy Kerley who both were out the last two games with knee injuries “looked good in practice today,” according to coach Rex Ryan.  They both should be ready for Sunday.

Maybe a struggling team will take a chance on an all-Shottenheimer leadership. With Marty as HC, Brian, OC and Kurt in charge of Special Teams. With all phases of the game covered, there would be no communication issues. Would be an interesting experiment.
