With training camp set to begin this Sunday, Ryan Tannehill shared his goals and expectations for the upcoming training sessions.
During the off-season between mini camps and OTAs, Tannehill has been working his body to stay in shape. He took two weeks off in January to recuperate and then immediately started his training routine. He weight trains 4-5 times a week and conditions his running to “stay fresh.” Going into training camp, this is exactly what fans should be excited to hear. As soon as camp drills start, Tannehill will be ready to focus specifically on his game technique, details of the QB position, and receiver chemistry.
Ultimately, Tannehill has high expectations going into both Sunday’s session and the upcoming season. First, he would love to see his third down completion percentage increase this season. In order to achieve this, he will fine tune his throwing skills during camp, focusing especially on passes to Mike Wallace. Second, Tannehill is going to concentrate on not making the same mistake twice. He has re-watched many of his game tapes during the off-season and honed in on what aspects he needs to work on. He also mentioned that working with Chad Pennington has helped him realize some of the areas he needs to work on most. His third goal is for the whole team in general; to win the AFC East title.
Tannehill stressed that it is important for the team to develop a sense of camaraderie during training camp. He explained that during camp, the players are constantly around each other on and off the field. This leads to an established knowledge of each individual player’s game style, which other members utilize during actual game play. Tannehill is determined to find chemistry with Wallace stating that he has “a lot of confidence in Mike” and that it is just a “matter of utilizing [him].”
Tannehill claimed his starting QB position season over both Matt Moore and David Garrard. Coming into training camp knowing that he is the starting QB has given him a lot of confidence. He has built up a lot of trust with the coaches and an open enough relationship with them to make suggestions, especially about the deep ball. Even though Moore did not receive the starting position, there is no bad blood between the two players. Tannehill looks up to Moore stating that “he has been a guy I can bounce ideas off of and watch film.”
This Sunday, fans should look for signs of improvement in Ryan Tannehill. His deep ball is extremely important and fans should note the chemistry between Tannehill and the new additions. So far the vibes in the locker room are all positive and the players are focused on achieving their personal goals. Hopefully this season the Dolphins will start and end strong as Tannehill believes they will. Training camp is a free event, so any fans in the area should attend to see the hard work these players are putting into this revamped Miami team.
