Rookie Profile-Giants’ Damontre Moore

It is no secret that the New York Giants and General Manager Jerry Reese have always looked to the NFL Draft to add depth to its defensive front. With that in mind, picking Texas A&M DE/LB Damontre Moore with their third round pick made perfect sense. Some scouts have likened Moore’s “hybrid” style of playing to that of current Giants DE Mathias Kiwanuka, who has gone back and forth between end and linebacker in his career.

Moore’s skill set should have placed him higher than the third round, but due to a string of off-the-field incidents, he fell into the Giants’ lap at No. 81 overall. When asked at his first day of rookie mini-camp about his talents and whether or not that will translate to immediate playing time, Moore said he can’t do anything but give it his best effort.

“I don’t know. I’m just going in working as hard as I can,” said Moore, who is listed at 6’4″, 250. “If I’m blessed enough to get out there on the field, I’m just going to give it my all and hopefully I can make something happen.”

Moore ranks sixth all-time in Aggie football history with 26.5 sacks in just three seasons there. With Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell’s propensity to blitz and blitz often, Moore stands to potentially get some good looks at opposing quarterbacks if he can get on the field. He said at mini-camp that he is very much looking forward to the defensive schemes he will be playing in.

“That gives me a lot of excitement because there’s a lot of veterans and there’s a lot of talented people here that are teaching and coaching,” said Moore. “So I’m just sitting here just trying to soak it all in and just ready to get to work and I’m just really eager. Hopefully some of their talents just rub off on me and I can have a little success.”

Moore, in a lot of ways, is the perfect player for the Giants NASCAR defensive set up. If he can learn the plays and take advantage of whatever playing time is offered, he certainly has the capabilities to become a reliable and productive member of the defense by the end of 2013. If he can improve on his sub-par 40 time (4.95) and, it is possible that Big Blue has Mathias Kiwanuka 2.0 on their hands with Damontre Moore.
