Giants’ royalty, rookie cornerback Prince Amukamara, is making progress and getting closer to be ready to take the field.
Giants secondary / cornerback coach Peter Giunta spoke about Amukamara this week. “Byron [Hansen, Coordinator of Rehabilitation] has been working very hard with him to get him back and ready to go,” Giunta said. “We’re waiting for Dr. Warren (Team Physician) to release him.”
Once he gets a clean bill of health, he still has to get up to game speed. Giunta commented, “It will take him a while to get that timing back and everything. Getting in football shape is a lot different than being in just running shape.”
The Giants could certainly use some help in the secondary, as the league has gotten more pass-happy than ever. After their bye week, over a seven-game span, they face Tom Brady, Michael Vick, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo. That’s a Murderer’s Row of quarterbacks, and they’ll need every healthy defensive back they can get.
On integrating Amukamara into the offense, Giunta said, “He’ll be behind, but hopefully we can bring him along slowly and we can give him a limited role to get him started and then gradually increase his role, just like you do with rookies in general.”
