Miami Dolphins Host Inaugural Coaches Clinic

Davie, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today concluded their inaugural Coaches Clinic at Nova Southeastern University. The entire Miami Dolphins coaching staff teamed with area college coaches to provide four days of training and expertise to area coaches to better serve their athletes.

The event opened with Miami Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin welcoming the attendees and stressing the importance of fundamentals and safety in all levels of the game.

“The older you get in your profession, you think back to the times when you were a young coach and you visited different colleges, different pro teams. You think about the coaches that spent time with you, teach you and help you develop as a coach. When you have the opportunity to do that for someone else, it’s rewarding,” Philbin said. “The most important aspect is how we teach some of the basic fundamentals. With young players you’re obviously concerned, as we are with NFL players, about teaching the game safely.”

The clinic was free to participants, with over 1000 local youth and high school coaches registered. Attendees gained knowledge on the fundamentals of the game, transitioned to position groups for more specialized instruction and concluded with demonstrations.

“One of the biggest requests that we’ve had as an organization is to do a football coaches clinic. We didn’t want to do it small; Coach Philbin’s vision was he really wanted to do it bigger. Not a cookie cutter event, but where our coaches can be intimately involved,” Miami Dolphins Senior Director of Community Affairs Twan Russell said.  “From the genesis of it, we wanted to make sure this event was about what’s going to impact our coaches, what’s going to give them the best opportunity to be better coaches.”

Parris Richmond, who coaches defensive backs and wide receivers for the Miami Gardens 9U Ravens, attended the event and spoke on the information he gained.

“What I took from this event was how to prepare the kids: stay with the basics and let them grow,” Richmond said. “It’s a great event to give back to the coaches, to help them continue to learn the game. The game keeps evolving and we as coaches need to continue to learn. The Dolphins did a great thing to bring the pros to the high school and little league level to help us learn.”
