How do you describe dominance? Well, dominance is pretty much when you are always winning and are the one who everyone wants to beat. Dominance is being the one who everyone looks up to and hopes that they can be like the person who is dominating. Having dominance in sports happens every so often – you can argue dominance has been the New York Yankees in baseball and the Boston Celtics in basketball. But does dominance every happen in racing?
After the Sunday, August 16th race at Michigan International Speedway, titled the Pure Michigan 400, two dominating factors emerged. Matt Kenseth during the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota dominated the race, while Joe Gibbs racing has dominated the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series during the summer months.
Kenseth started from the pole on Sunday and led 146 of the the 200 laps in the race – almost 75%! Kenseth also scored his third win of this racing season and second in the last three events. The win was also Kenneth’s 34th of his career. Being the modest driver Kenseth is, he only resorted to letting everyone know he will continue to work hard with his team
“We’ve had a great couple months. We definitely have some momentum built. The guys gave us a rocket today. They’ve been giving us rockets the last couple of months, so we’re lust going to work hard to keep it rolling.”
The other aspect of dominance? You are not able to argue it is Joe Gibbs Racing, as the team has won six of the last eight races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. The driver who won the other four, Kyle Busch, was injured for the first part of the season. Team owner and former NFL head coach of the Washington Redskins was modest about the streak
“It took us a long time. “We were down for about a year and a half. We’ve come back to a point where I think now we’ve got a chance in races.”
If Kenneth keeps up the streak he is on, he likely will be contending for the championship once The Chase for the Championship begins. However, with the Joe Gibbs Racing team continuing to put of the wins, it appears a driver from this stable will win the championship for the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.
