The New York Daily News spoke to numerous Jets players who weren’t shy about throwing QB Mark Sanchez under the bus after a disappointing 8-8 campaign. “He’s lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched,” one player said.
“He just doesn’t have the mental toughness to be great… especially in New York,” another teammates added. Sanchez simply hasn’t progressed the way the team had hoped. He threw a career-high 26 TDs in 2011 but also committed a career-high 26 turnovers, including 9 over the final 3 weeks.
Sanchez’s yards-per-attempt average also dipped for the 2nd-straight year, bottoming out at 6.4. He completed just 2 passes of 40+ yards. Sanchez enters the offseason as the clear favorite to be New York’s 2012 starter, but don’t be surprised if the team brings in stiffer competition.
