Love him or hate him, Tony Romo isn’t what is preventing the Cowboys from contending for a Super Bowl. You know the stats, 1-6 in win or go home games, and only 1 playoff win. But do you know or remember what life was like before Bill Parcell’s promoted Romo to the spotlight that is quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys?
Well if you don’t, lets wind back the clock. After Troy Aikman played his final game as a Cowboy in the year 2000, he was replaced by Quincy Carter, Anthony Wright, Ryan Leaf (yup that Ryan Leaf), Clint Stoerner, Chad Hutchinson, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Henson, and serviceable veteran Drew Bledsoe. From 2001, when Quincy Carter took his first snaps, to 2006 when Romo won his first start in week 7 against the Carolina Panthers, the Cowboys were an abysmal 38-48. Since then, with Romo under center, the Cowboys are 55-38.
Yes, since Romo has taken over, the Cowboys have 1 playoff win. However, before he was spinning away from pass rushers, slipping out of sacks, and scrambling his way to the Cowboys all time record for passing yards and touchdowns, the Cowboys had zero playoff wins.
Think of Romo as the good job you have. It is enjoyable. It pays the bills well and allows you to live a good life. It is a job that you would be a fool to leave unless you had something extremely better lined up. Romo is that job. He puts up great numbers. He wins games and keeps the Cowboys in contention. Until the Cowboys have another quarterback who can take over and elevate the team’s play, it would be foolish to part ways with him.
Try to remember those awful seasons between Aikman and Romo. Those are what lie ahead if Romo is irresponsibly let go. Love him or hate him, Tony Romo is going to be the Cowboys quarterback for the remainder of his career. If the Dallas Cowboys expect to win their 6th Super Bowl in the near future, it will be Romo hoisting the Lombardi trophy. Maybe it is time for Cowboys Nation to remember what life was like before Romo and support him until his #9 jersey is hanging in the Jerry World rafters.
