Getting Ready for Some Old School Hitting

The 49ers-Giants game today figures to feature some of the hardest hitting we’ve seen all season.  Both teams are chomping at the bit to get back to a Super Bowl, and both teams seem eager to prove who is the toughest.

First, earlier this week, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs announced he is hoping for some helmet-to-helmet contact today, saying, “I wish like hell they’d hit me in the head.”

“A helmet-to-helmet hit. I want one of those. Because that means they’re staying high, you know. They’re not going to the ground and trying to make tackles at the shoe strings.”

Apparently, Jacobs isn’t familiar with the potential outcomes of concussions, and the long term consequences.  Or the fact that the 49ers have knocked running backs out of six games this season, and set and NFL record by giving up the fewest rushing touchdowns all season of any team in the modern era (3 TDs in 16 games).

49ers safety Donte Whitner is certainly eager for some contact today as well.

We play physical,’’ Whitner said. “Whenever you play physical, people get hurt.’’  Whitner knocked Saints RB Pierre Thomas out of last weekends playoff game.

“We don’t want to go out and intentionally hurt anybody,’’ Whitner said. “But when you play this game the way we play, we play fast and carefree, some guys are going to end up getting injured. We are not going to stop playing physical. Guys come out of the game, hopefully it’s not too bad of an injury.’’
