Cutler Was in Favor of Martz Firing

A day after Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz resigned, it has come out that quarterback Jay Cutler was in favor of Martz’ departure.

When he resigned, Martz was very matter-of-fact about his departure.  “There’s nothing to analyze,’’ Martz said. ‘‘This is a personal thing for me. There isn’t anything to talk about or discuss.”

‘‘I have great memories of Chicago. The people there are great.’’

Since then, it has been reported that Cutler went to Halas Hall and lobbied for the departure of Martz.

Cutler complained early in the season about the number of sacks he was taking, as he accumulated 14 sacks in September alone.  Martz’ schemes frequently call for maximum receivers in the pattern and longer throws downfield, which result in less protection and require the quarterback to hold the ball longer.  After the earlier season complaints, when Cutler questioned if he could survive the season, the Bears focused more on their running game and protection and the sacks dropped (to 7 in October and 2 in November).  The Bears then responded by going on a 6-1 run before losing Cutler to injury.
