The Colts’ season may be over, but they are on the clock and making news already, with the playoffs barely underway.
The Colts owe Peyton Manning a $28 million option bonus on March 8th of this year, one of the difficult sticking points related to figuring out his ability to play in 2012 and beyond. Manning has been the franchise for the last 13 years, but that’s a big payment for a player that has missed an entire year. Peter King is reporting that both Manning and the Colts may be willing to push back the deadline for that payment, which could serve both parties well.
At the same time, Chris Mortensen is reporting today that the Colts are planning to take Andrew Luck with the number one overall pick, which comes as no surprise.
That sets up the potential for Andrew Luck to learn from Peyton Manning, and for both quarterbacks to be on the Colts roster for next season. That is the best of all possible worlds for the Colts, as shipping Manning off would be viewed as sacrilege by the fans, but his long term viability after missing a season is in question.
And spending a couple years holding a clipboard didn’t seem to have a bad affect on Aaron Rodgers performance the last two years.
