Alex Smith Suffered a Concussion Against Dallas

Both teams apparently played with injured quarterbacks in Sunday’s game between the Cowboys and the 49ers.   49ers Alex Smith, it was revealed today, suffered a concussion at some point during the game. Cowboy’s Tony Romo suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung.

According to the 49ers, Smith showed no signs of a concussion during the game and reported symptoms afterward. He was checked out and determined to have suffered a concussion.

Under the new NFL rules, Smith had to pass a neurological examination and be cleared by both his team and an independent neurological consultant before returning to practice. He did so and practiced in full today.

Smith was sacked six times by the Cowboys, but the biggest hit he absorbed may have come when he was tackled by a Cowboys defender as he threw a completion.”Tough son of a gun,” Harbaugh said Wednesday before Smith’s concussion became public. “He was making some big-time plays. I think we talked about it after each of these games, definitely watch the tape and see the same thing. Pleased with the way Alex is playing and we definitely want to play better. He wants to, we want to, and that goes for all positions on the offensive side of the ball, and include coaching in that. We’re striving to do it all better.”
