What difference a year makes for Tim Tebow. Last year at this time Tebow was the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos and he was also leading them into the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs against the New England Patriots. Fast forward one year later and Tebow’s life has completely changed. He is almost certain to be released by the New York Jets who traded for the “most famous backup quarterback ever” back in March from the Denver Bronocs who ended up receiving a fourth round and sixth round draft pick from the New York Jets for Tebow and a seventh round draft pick for this April’s draft.
This whole year has been a disappointment for Tebow and his fans for many reasons. He only threw six passes for 32 yards and only totaled to have 141 yards in offense by himself, he was originally brought in to “challenge” struggling Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez but that never worked out because he was not giving enough opportunities to prove his worth to the Jets, and this year was just a complete bust and probably one of the worst acquisitions the Jets ever made.
Tim Tebow may not ever develop into a quality starting quarterback but he has always been one of the hardest workers and one of the best team players the NFL fans have ever seen. He has never wanted to come to a team and be their backup or gimmick guy who only has a few snaps a game; especially in the Wildcat Package; and is supposed to make spectacular plays ever time he has the ball in his hands.
Many NFL ex-players and experts have said that Tebow doesn’t have the skill set to be a starting quarterback in the NFL like ESPN NFL analyst Merrill Hodge who recently said “I think he’s phony as a three-dollar bill” meaning he didn’t think Tebow was the “ultimate team player” that he says he is and he will do anything to help his team win. But on the other side of the argument, some coaches think Tim Tebow could excel in the NFL if he is given the right opportunity and is put into the right situation. One coach who believes Tebow could succeed in the NFL is New York Jets special teams coordinator, Mike Westoff who recently said during an interview on 560-AM WQAM in New York that ” if you just say this is a quintessential NFL drop back quarterback, no he’s not. He’s just not. But if you use him a lot of different facets, in my opinion, I think he’s outstanding. If you do that. But we didn’t do it. And it was a distraction … and really a shame. Because that’s a hard-working young man if you ever saw one. Believe me.”
Will Tim Tebow ever get another chance to revive himself and Tebow-mania or will Tebow just end up being an athlete whose career ended before his potential was fully utilized? Only time will tell if that happens but in my opinion I would like to see Tebow make many more spectacular plays like the one he made last year in the Wildcard round.
