The NFL banned “bounty” hunting within regulation football games, which is why it came as such a surprise when Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin made a comment that sounded a lot like an intent-to-injure. He was talking about Reggie Bush and was quoted as saying, by ESPNNewYork.com, that “We want to knock him out, but we’re out to do it legally.”
This comment has received attention from both the NFL and the Dolphin’s franchise for its striking bluntness at the goal. Although the quote states that the Jets want to do things “legally,” under no circumstances should a team ever target injuring another player. This comment came after a statement Bush made about the Jets’ star cornerback Darrelle Revis. Bush commented “what goes around comes around” after he was notified that Revis’ injury was season-ending.
Coach Rex Ryan has repeatedly stated that he believes Bush owes the Jets franchise an apology, but Bush has yet to do so. If in fact Bush is hurt in this Sunday’s rematch of these two divisional rivals, it is sure to spark some attention from the NFL and put the Jets in a very serious situation.
