The Jacksonville Jaguars today were awarded rookie wide receiver Kevin Smith off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals. Rookie long snapper Trevor Gillette was waived from the roster.
Smith, 5-11, 214, was originally signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted rookie on May 12 and waived on June 4. He was a four-year letterman at Washington where he finished his career with 72 receptions for 1,059 yards. He posted a career-high 50 catches for 765 yards and four touchdowns as a senior. He saw action at wide receiver and return specialist as a junior.
Smith played in 12 of 13 games as a sophomore with his only missed game the Alamo Bowl after suffering an injury in practice leading up to the bowl. He averaged 25.9 yards on 52 kick returns and finished the season with 15 catches for 207 yards. He played in 10 games as a freshman and was a regular in the receiving rotation and as a kick returner.
A native of Compton, California, Smith attended Centennial High School where he didn’t play football until his junior year of high school. He also played on the basketball team.
