MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed center Mike Pouncey to a contract extension through the 2020 season, it was announced today.
“We are excited that we were able to sign a contract extension with Mike,” said General Manager Dennis Hickey. “He is a two-time Pro Bowler, with a team first approach as evident by moving to guard last season while still playing a high level. We are happy that he will stay in Miami and be a key member of our offense.”
The 6-5, 305-pound, Pouncey is entering his fifth season in the NFL in 2015, all with the Dolphins. In his career, he has started all 58 games he has played in and earned Pro Bowl selections in each of the past two seasons (2013-14), first at center and then at guard. He is the first offensive player and one of only three Dolphins to earn Pro Bowl recognition at different positions, joining Randy Starks (defensive end in 2011 and defensive tackle in 2013) and Cameron Wake (linebacker in 2011 and defensive end from 2013-15).
In 2014, Pouncey started the final 12 games of the season at right guard after being inactive the first four games due to injury. He was part of an offensive line that produced 361 first downs for the season, tied for the second most in a season in franchise history, and helped pave the way for the Dolphins to record a 1,000-yard rusher (Lamar Miller – 1,099 rushing yards) and a 4,000-yard passer (Ryan Tannehill – 4,045 passing yards) for the first time in franchise history. He protected Tannehill, who set career highs in 2014 in passing yards, touchdown passes (27), completion percentage (66.4 percent) and passer rating (92.8). Additionally, Pouncey helped block for a ground attack that averaged 4.69 yards per rushing attempt, the second highest in the NFL in 2014 and the fifth highest single-season average in franchise history.
Pouncey played collegiately at Florida where he saw action in 54 games with 45 starts, including starts at right guard (28 games), center (13 games) and defensive tackle (four games). In his senior season, Pouncey started all 13 games at center and earned All-SEC honors by the Associated Press. Born July 24, 1989 in Bartow, Fla., Pouncey attended Lakeland Senior High School.
