D.C Radio Station Changes It’s Call Letters in Support of Robert Griffin III

It’s been a rough week for Washington D.C sports fans. The city watched their prized possession, Washington Redskins’ QB Robert Griffin III re-aggravate his LCL sprain in a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday. Then spent two additional days anxiously awaiting news on Griffin’s knee – fearing that he would have to undergo major knee surgery. Well, he did, and now everyone’s main concern is if Griffin will be back healthy in time for the 2013 season.

In a incentive to raise the spirits of not only the fan base, but Robert Griffin III – DC radio station WPGC 95.5 has changed their call letters to WRG3 for the weekend.

In a statement to PPI from WPGC’s program director Jason Kidd – “While the playoffs may continue without the skins, we’re giving the fans a little extra something and at the same time thanking RG3 for a great year and hope that he gets better soon!”

This marks the station’s first name change since adopting the WPGC call letters in 1958. And it’s all attributed to what has now become the “Nations Quarterback” Robert Griffin III.  Without a doubt, this is one of the more incredible and unique efforts to date.

Griffin initially sustained his injury a month ago against the Baltimore Ravens when nose tackle Haloti Nagta bulldozed his leg on a scramble. After re-aggravating the injury against Seattle, Griffin had to undergo surgery Wednesday by team orthopedic surgeon James Andrews. “He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction,” Dr. Andrews said. “We expect a full recovery and it is everybody’s hope and belief that due to Robert’s high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season. The goal of his treatment is to give him the best opportunity for a long professional career.”

When it comes to the DMV, there are two popular individuals – the president and the Washington Redskins’ quarterback. This season, not only has Washington’s quarterback Robert Griffin III surpassed the popularity level of the President, he’s also become one of the more popular athletes in the nation. At this point, I don’t think there’s a knee in the world that has garnered more attention than that of Robert Griffin III’s.
