Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, aka Megatron, won the coveted cover for Madden NFL ’13, pulling off a victory in a fan vote over the runner up, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
The two were the finalists from a 32-man single elimination field, that featured head-to-head fan voting matchups. Nearly 20 million votes were cast in total in the elimination tournament to choose the new cover winner.
While Newton doesn’t earn the cover, he can now breathe a sigh of release, since at least he doesn’t have to worry about the infamous Madden cover jinx. Peyton Hillis was on the cover of Madden NFL ’12 and ended up only playing in 10 games this past season, dropping from 1,177 yards rushing in 2010 (the year before earning the cover) to 587 yards after he was on the cover.
This may be one contest where it is truly better to be the runner up.
