Now that Brian Bowles has filled the Eagles defensive coordinator vacancy, the team’s new defensive mentality will be to remain unpredictable. And according to Philly.com, Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham says it’s the exact opposite of former coordinator Juan Castillo defensive game plan.
“I think we started running the same stuff over and over,” Graham said Wednesday. “We ‘re not switching it up as much. You could hear it on the sideline — a lot of times we run the same coverage.”
The Eagles have lost many close games over the last two seasons, especially in the fourth quarter, and Castillo’s play calls gave offenses obvious looks depending upon the down and distance.
“That’s what he talked about — not being predictable in the fourth quarter,” Graham said of Bowles. “By the fourth quarter everybody knows what we’re going to do. That’s how we get beat.”
Graham has seen more playing time under new coordinator Brian Bowles, but has struggles to see as much as he would like being designated behind Trent Cole and Jason Babin on the depth chart.
“I know right now they’re trying to figure out who they’re trying to play,” Graham said. “I’m just trying to make sure I keep chopping at it, keep working hard, and hope everything goes my way.”
Graham’s comments seem to be a form of pilling on Juan Rivera. If it was such a concern, why wasn’t this addressed while Rivera was still in a position to change the defensive philosophy?
