Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery is feverously searching for a new head coach, with prospects starting internally in the Bears organization.
Sources said Emery has shown interest in Bears special teams coach Dave Toub. Toub, who has been a candidate for head coaching jobs in the past including the Miami Dolphins, is one of four special teams coaches who have been identified as candidates. The others include Keith Armstrong of the Falcons, Joe DeCamillis of the Cowboys and Mike Priefer of the Vikings.
Coaches with an offensive background who have interviewed or are scheduled to interview include Bruce Arians of the Colts, Darrell Bevell of the Seahawks, Pete Carmichael of the Saints, Tom Clements of the Packers, Rick Dennison of the Texans, Mike McCoy of the Broncos, Mike Sullivan of the Bucs and Marc Trestman of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
Although the Bears failed to return a touchdown in 2012, Toub’s unit finished eighth in the comprehensive special teams rankings. Emery and Toub also share a connection to strength and conditioning with Toub serving 15 seasons as a strength coach at Missouri and Texas El Paso.
