NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says his office has communicated with suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton about his eventual reinstatement, and Goodell did not eliminate the possibility of Peyton rejoining the franchise before the Super Bowl.
“I don’t want to say he could be because, again, we are in the early stages,” Goodell said as he left for the airport after the NFL owners meetings in Irving, Texas. “We are starting to talk about it.”
The news arrives shortly after former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue vacated the suspensions of Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Anthony Hargrove, and exonerated Scott Fujita.
The Saints are 5-8 and the possibility of making the playoffs is a long shot. If Peyton were to return to the Saints before the Super Bowl, chances are he would rejoin a team on the outside looking in.
