San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith will earn a $1 million bonus today, for playing in a playoff game and playing in 70 percent of the snaps this season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Smith was signed to a 1-year, $4.9 million contract in the offseason, a move which head coach Jim Harbaugh strongly supported but which was questioned elsewhere, and Smith responded with an outstanding season. He passed for over 3100 yards, 17 TDs and only 5 INTs, and led the 49ers to a 13-3 regular season record.
He also earned a $1.5 million bonus for playing in over 80 percent of the team’s snaps this season. He has proven he can be an effective and winning starter in the NFL, and with his strong relationship with Harbaugh, he stands to land a long term contract in the offseason.
