Chris Canty, Super Bowl-winning defensive tackle for the New York Giants, makes the most of his time during the offseason. He is actively involved in the community and constantly is looking for ways to help out those who are in need. He established the Chris Canty Foundation to help youth in the community.
The Chris Canty Foundation hosted a community cleanup project in Charlotte, N.C. earlier this offseason to help revitalize communities in that area. Canty’s foundation also held its 6th annual football camp recently. Canty hosted “The Champions Golf Classic” in West Nyack, N.Y. in May to raise money for his foundation.
In an exclusive interview during his visit to NFLPA headquarters in Washington, D.C., Canty discussed his involvement in the community.
Q: What does it mean for you to be able to give back to the community?
A: It means a lot. I believe I was blessed with this platform for a purpose. It is not just to fulfill my own love to play football. I was put in this position to be able to give back and to be able to enhance other people’s lives. I try to take what I know and what I have learned, my relationships and my resources, and pour that into those who are in need.
Q: What events have you and your foundation hosted recently?
A: This was my 6th year holding a football camp for kids. It was a three-day camp, and we [got] more than 300 kids. We partnered with the United Way and the Police Athletic League of New York City. I have a passion for working with kids, so a lot of my service work is directed towards them.
Q: Could you also describe your charity golf event?
A: We usually do an annual gala to help fund-raise for our foundation, but his year we wanted to do something fun and interactive, so we thought a golf outing would be the perfect event. It [was] a great opportunity to raise money for a great cause. The event was held at Manhattan Woods Golf Club. There were more than a few Giants with me, too, so it [was] a lot of fun.
