After another disappointing season in San Diego, it appears that both head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will be gone after the season.
According to the SignonSanDiego.com, Chargers president Dean Spanos feels he has “no choice” but to go in another direction after the season is over. That seems to be largely decided with respect to Turner, but that Spanos is still struggling with GM Smith. It is believed that a strong playoff run could save one or both of their jobs.
They are currently in the basement of the AFC West at 4-7, as they have fallen apart after a 4-1 start, and now lost six straight.
The Chargers have had one of the more talented rosters in the AFC for the last several years, but always seem to underperform. They were 9-7 and missed the playoffs last year, following a 13-3 season the year before which ended with disappointment with a first round playoff loss to the New York Jets.
The head coach change makes sense – just look north to Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco to see what a difference a head coach can make. But if Spanos really thinks that they are an underperforming but talented roster, firing the man who assembled the talent doesn’t seem to make sense.
