New Orleans- With over a minute left in regulation and the Saints on the verge of going to the Super Bowl, the refs missed a call that will live in infamy with Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints. In the red zone on a third and short, Drew Brees threw a pass to his receiver Tommy Lee Lewis on and in and out route and Nickell Robey Coleman blasted him with a helmet to helmet hit, as well as pass interference, but the side judge did not throw the flag. That was the pivotal call that was missed.
Instead of having the ball at the 1-yard line, the Saints had to kick a field goal with under 45 seconds left to go in regulation to go up 23-20 against the Los Angeles Rams. Jared Goff took his team the length of the field with a couple of passes in the middle of the field and two costly penalties on the Saints to have their field goal kicker kick a game-tying kick at the end of regulation to make it 23-23
In overtime, the Saints had the opportunity to score first, but Drew Brees threw an interception at the 50-yard line, setting up the Rams in good field goal position. The Rams kicked a field goal to break the Saint’s heart and win the game, 26-23.
Goff finished the game with 297 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. However, Todd Gurley did not play and there has been some speculation that he is not healthy, so with moving forward, it will be interesting to see if C.J. Anderson will be the main back in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots.
After the game was finished, Payton had some words for the refs. Just got off the phone with the league office,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “They blew the call.”
The Rams will face the New England Patriots once again in a rematch of the 2001 Super Classic.
