On Monday, the 2014 Miami Dolphins rookie class, along with general manager Dennis Hickey met with athletes from the Special Olympics at University School in Davie, Fla.

All of the 31 rookie players either coached or refereed in a game of flag football. The Dolphin players also ran a fun fitness circuit for the Special Olympics athletes. After today’s events, Dolphins first round pick Ju’Wuan James spoke about his first experience working with the Special Olympics athletes.

“It was fun, and it’s great just being out here and coming out here with the other rookies and just having a good time,” said James. “Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces, being excited and us celebrating with them– it was pretty cool.”

Around 45 athletes from the Special Olympics ranging from teens to young adults participated in the event. Along with James, Dolphins second-round pick Jarvis Landry also enjoyed working with the athletes.

“It means the world to see the character of these guys in the situation they are in and be able to show support to these athletes and give back,” said Landry. “I think that’s the biggest thing and the biggest factor right now, and I can’t say enough about the Dolphins organization.”

Not only did Hickey believe the Special Olympic athletes enjoyed themselves, but so did the Dolphins players.

“I think the athletes are having as much fun as the (Special Olympics) athletes out here, and they are doing a great job with them and it’s a lot of fun,” said Hickey. “It’s important for us and it’s been an emphasis for the Dolphins to be giving back to our community and being involved and making an impact. Our guys have done a great job with that this offseason and we look forward to continuing that.
