In his Tuesday press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was still seething about his team’s embarrassing 35-7 loss to the division rival Baltimore Ravens.
And Tomlin was eloquent with his anger, stating that, “People who know and compete in this league understand that there’s a fine line between drinking wine and squashing grapes. Obviously, last weekend, we were grape squashers.”
Tomlin’s comments got me to thinking about some of the great head coaching rants of the past. Here are my personal top three, counted down.
3 – Jim Mora, “Playoffs?”
Jim Mora’s disbelief at the reporter’s question about his team’s playoff chances is one of the all time great responses. Never has so much emotion been injected into a single word – “Playoffs?” Priceless. Bronze medal.
2 – Mike Singletary, “Can’t have it.”
Singletary gets bonus points, since this was after his first game as a head coach. The slow burn he exhibits as he critiques Vernon Davis’ commitment and his willingness to play with ten men if he had to still serves as one of the most motivational of post-game rants. And this speech actually seemed to inspire Davis and help to turn him into the Pro Bowl players he remains today. Great rant, Mike. Silver medal.
1 – Dennis Green, “They are who we thought they were.”
Dennis Green still holds the title in my book, and this is a hard one to beat. The level of anger he exhibits, and the way he builds himself up to a crescendo before storming out is the mark of a true champion. Well done, Dennis. Gold medal and still unbeaten.
